Glossary of Paranormal Terms
Afterlife
A life or existence believed to follow death.
Apparition
A ghostly figure; a specter. A sudden or unusual sight. The act of appearing.
Aura
A distinctive but intangible quality that seems to surround a person or thing.
Channel
The medium through which a spirit guide purportedly communicates with the physical world.
Clairvoyant
Having the supposed power to see objects or events that cannot be perceived by the senses.
Cold Spot
An area where the temperature is lower than the surrounding environment. Believed to be created when a spirit is presence within that area.
Disembodied
To free the soul or spirit from the body.
Disembodied Voices
Voices that are heard even though no physical body is present, also known as Electronic Voice Phenomena.
Divination
The art or act of foretelling future events or revealing occult knowledge by means of augury or an alleged supernatural agency.
Ectoplasm
The visible substance believed to emanate from the body of a spiritualistic medium during communication with the dead. An immaterial or ethereal substance, especially the transparent corporeal presence of a spirit or ghost.
Electromagnetic Field
The field of force associated with electric charge in motion, having both electric and magnetic components and containing a definite amount of electromagnetic energy.
Electronic Voice Phenomena
Voices or sounds that are recorded even when there is no physical presence and that cannot be heard at the time the recording is made.
EMF Detector
A device that measures and detects changes in the electromagnetic field.
Exorcism
The act, practice, or ceremony of exorcising evil spirits from a human being.
Extra Sensory Perception (ESP)
Communication or perception by means other than the physical senses.
Ghost
The spirit of a dead person, especially one believed to appear in bodily likeness to living persons or to haunt former habitats.
Haunted
To inhabit, visit, or appear to in the form of a ghost or other supernatural being.
Levitation
To rise or cause to rise into the air and float in apparent defiance of gravity.
Malevolent Spirit
Spirit having an evil or harmful influence. Exhibiting ill will; wishing harm to others; malicious.
Manifestation
The materialized form of a spirit.
Materialization
When a spirit takes physical form or shape.
Medium
A person thought to have the power to communicate with the spirits of the dead or with agents of another world or dimension. Also called psychic.
Necromancer
The practice of supposedly communicating with the spirits of the dead in order to predict the future.
Occult
Of, relating to, or dealing with supernatural influences, agencies, or phenomena.
Orb
Sphere shaped, translucent mass of energy resembling a ball of light. Thought by some in the paranormal field to be spirit or ghostly energy.
Paranormal
Beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation.
Parapsychology
The study of the evidence for psychological phenomena, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, and psychokinesis, that are inexplicable by science.
Phantom
Something apparently seen, heard, or sensed, but having no physical reality; a ghost or an apparition.
Poltergeist
A German word that means "noisy ghost." A ghost that manifests itself by noises, rappings, and the creation of disorder.
Possession
The state of being dominated by or as if by evil spirits.
Precognition
Knowledge of something in advance of its occurrence, especially by extrasensory perception; clairvoyance.
Premonition
A presentiment of the future; a foreboding. An early warning about a future event.
Preternatural
Surpassing the normal or usual; extraordinary. Transcending the natural or material order; supernatural.
Psychic
A person capable of extraordinary mental processes, such as extrasensory perception and mental telepathy.
Spirit
The soul, considered as departing from the body of a person at death. A supernatural being such as an angel or a demon.
Vortex
A place or situation regarded as drawing into its center all that surrounds it.
